Yemen (Grove's Dictionary) (2001 a)

Unified in 1990, Yemen displays a huge variety of musical styles and circumstances of performance, due to its human geography : sedentary farmers, nomads and fishermen as well as townspeople. Rural music may be described according to the different regions and social circumstancies : highlands, coastal plains, the middle Yemen, Hadramawt, Mahra and Socotra. Urban music includes mainly the traditions of Sanaa, Lahej, Hadramawt and Aden.

Rooted in a ancient culture, Yemeni music also has common points with other traditions of the Arabian Peninsula, but has developped a very specific cultural and musical identity.
